Meet the brains behind Comedy Loft

Chortle award-winning Comedy Loft is the brand new comedy night coming to the Civic. With a changing line-up each month, you’re in for a treat with a quality pro headliner backed by some of the best rising talent from the South West and beyond. Comedy Loft kicks things off on Thursday 14th September with Matt Price, Alex Milner, Hannah Weetman and Phil Wathern, plus tickets are just £7.50!

We caught up with Martin from Comedy Loft ahead of their launch to see what Comedy Loft nights are all about.

We are so excited that Comedy Loft is coming to Trowbridge! What can you tell us about Comedy Loft and what you do?

I’m excited too! Comedy Loft is a stand-up comedy show that I started with a couple of other people out of a room above a pub on Bristol’s main drinking street – King St. We still run that night and it lets us showcase the best acts from across the country. I then choose the ones I feel will be best suited to our nights outside the city (like this one) and get people laughing. What sets our night apart from others is that the quality is always kept really high with the price kept low. People always tell me we should charge more but I’d rather get more people in laughing and not price them out in this current climate. The other thing we also pride ourselves on is the atmosphere. We’ve been doing this a while now so we know what makes a good show.

Who are the brains behind Comedy Loft and when did you get started?

Obviously, I have to say I’m the brains behind the operation. I’m certainly not the brawn. 3 of us started the show in Bristol in March 2020 (great timing I know). Since coming back post-pandemic I’ve been setting up satellite shows like Trowbridge steadily over the last couple of years.

Who are some Comedy Loft alumni that have performed at previous shows?

We’ve had some really exciting acts on our big showcase shows that we do on Friday nights in Bristol. We’ve had New York comic Mary Beth Barone on who’s recently been in Black Mirror and has previously had her own show on Comedy Central in the states. We’ve also had veteran surrealist Tony Law on who’s been on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Have I got News for You and 8 out of 10 cats. Recently we had Glenn Moore on who’s made a lot of appearances on Mock the Week, Comedy Central and The Russell Howard Show. He’s an Edinburgh Festival main prize nominee as well. I’m hoping that the night in Trowbridge takes off and we can get people like this and more at the Civic!

What has Comedy Loft achieved since starting out and what has been a career highlight so far?

We’ve achieved a lot in a relatively short period of time. Our night is now well known in Bristol and Witney (West Oxfordshire) as the best and most fun in those places. We have 3 more regular shows that share this great atmosphere across the South/South West. We also won the Chortle Award for Best Comedy Night in Midlands, West and Wales. Overall getting thousands of people laughing across the time we’ve been running has been a highlight. It’s got so much bigger than we ever imagined.

What makes a Comedy Loft show stand out from other comedy shows on the circuit?

I think I’ve jumped ahead and answered your question! I think it’s the fact that I’m a comedy fan at heart so I really push hard to get a connection with the audience. Every single decision I make when putting a show together puts the audience first, from the line up to the staging to the stupid 90s gameshow rip-offs I like to do. The atmosphere of our shows I’ve found is difficult to find elsewhere and our acts/audience agree.

Comedy Loft shows combine seasoned headliners with up-and-coming talent. How do you strike the perfect balance between the two?

Watching an awful lot of comedy. I’ve seen hundreds of acts now and I know what will work and what won’t. We often surprise people with the quality of support acts. There’s not much balance needed when the quality is so high throughout. But I always make sure there’s a top circuit headliner at all the shows. Then I make sure there’s enough quality and variety with the support acts to make sure there’s always something for everyone. Because no one wants to see 5 guys in their 20s talking about tinder.

September’s line-up: Matt Price, Alex Milner, Phil Wathern, and Hannah Weetman.

What can the audience expect from a Comedy Loft show at the Civic?

Laughs, lots of laughs. And a really fun night out on a schoolnight without breaking the bank. A great mix of stand-up both with the type of comedy and the types of people. We don’t care what people look like or where they’re from as long as they’re funny. We pick the best comics that we see around the circuit and give them as much stage time as possible.

Anything exciting coming up for Comedy Loft in the near future?

Absolutely! At the end of this week we’re doing our first 100% pro show at our usual Bristol venue featuring nothing but top pro circuit comics. We’ve got an experimental show at the end of this month where the audience can throw softballs at comics if they don’t like their material (this got a feature on the BBC). And we’ve got Huge Davies performing at our new and brilliant venue near Temple Meads station in October. He’s been on a few TV shows including Jonathan Ross’ comedy club and comedy central roast battles. But obviously the most important new project we’ve got upcoming is our Trowbridge debut!
