Get to know Eleven Roller Disco

Eleven Roller Disco is rolling into Trowbridge on Saturday 23rd September and we can’t wait! There’s so much fun to be had with sessions throughout the day for families and teens, ending with an adults-only roller disco to finish the night on a high! Perfect for skaters of all skill levels, whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, with tickets starting from just £6 (including hire skates and safety kit!).

Ahead of the full-day skating event, we caught up with Nigel from Eleven Roller Disco to learn a little more about what they do and what you can expect this September.

Tell us a little bit about Eleven Roller Disco. Who is the team made up of and how did you get started?

We are a community interest company and we started in 2014. Big Ben, Nigel and Iona manage the events and our team of friendly Marshals make sure the skate floor is safe and fun.

What services do Eleven Roller Disco offer?

We believe that roller skating is for everyone and it’s a great way to meet new people and keep fit. All we do is make sure that’s exactly what happens.

You first started off as Frome Roller Disco hosting events at the Cheese & Grain. How did you expand to other venues across Wiltshire and Somerset?

Skaters came to our sessions at the Cheese and Grain from all over Somerset and Wiltshire. Skating needs to be accessible for everyone and so we became mobile. Venues welcomed us and we’ve never looked back!

An Eleven Roller Disco in action.

We can’t wait for the Roller Disco at the Civic this September. What can skaters expect?

Great music, silly games, dancing and fun for everyone regardless of whether you are new to skating, or a seasoned pro.

Any important tips for first-time skaters?

It’s all in the knees. Keep them bent and look in the direction that you’re skating in. Our friendly Marshals will be on hand to give tips, suggestions and encouragement.

What is your favourite thing about hosting skating events?

Seeing the joy and laughter. It’s old fashioned fun, brought well and truly up to date.

What makes Eleven Roller Disco stand out from the crowd?

Inclusivity. We believe skating is for everyone. I won’t bore you with the science, but trust me, the benefits are enormous. Come and be part of our movement!

What have been some of your career highlights for Eleven Roller Disco so far?

We have loved working with schools and organisations that promote health and wellbeing for people who are less physically able. So much fun.

How did you get into roller skating and do you have a favourite skating memory?

I remember getting my first pair of skates back in 1982. I was not very good at riding a bike or anything that involved balance, but skating made sense to me. Should a man in his late 40s be skating all this time later? Definitely!

What are some of your favourite songs to skate along to?

I’m a disco fan, but there are so many great DJ’s out there who really understand how to get the floor rolling. Come along and you’ll see what I mean.

Is there anything exciting  coming up for Eleven Roller Disco in the future?

Yes, but I can’t confirm it yet! Watch this space at elevenrollerdisco.org
